Questionnaire | SMS Educator | Foundation

You will have options ‘agree’, ‘disagree’ or ‘don’t know’ to choose from in response to statements.

SECTION I: Introduction to the Microbiome

Q1: You are only 40% Human. The other 60% is Microbes.

Q2: The human microbiome (or human microbiota) is the collection of microorganisms which live in and on us. These are bacteria, fungi, viruses and others. They reside in the gut, on the skin and places like the oral and nasal cavity.

Q3: The skin is the largest organ in the body and is host to probably the most diverse range of microbes in the human body (the skin microbiome).

Agree Disagree Don’t know

Q4: Your skin microbiome defends you from disease and is not just important for your skin health but whole body health too.

Agree Disagree Don’t know

SECTION II: The Science

Q1: A healthy gut microbiome has high Biodiversity.

Agree Disagree Don’t know

Q2: Just like the gut, a healthy skin microbiome has high Biodiversity too.

Agree Disagree Don’t know

Q3: The exposure of normal, Western skin to twenty-first-century cosmetics, soap, antibiotics, and steroids, does appear to have altered the natural skin microbiome of humans.

Agree Disagree Don’t know

Q4: A low diversity of microorganisms is associated with a plethora of diseases including allergies, diabetes, obesity, arthritis, inflammatory bowel diseases and even neuropsychiatric disorders.

Agree Disagree Don’t know

Q5: Restoring a depleted skin microbiome is best achieved by creating the correct conditions for biodiversity to thrive.

Agree Disagree Don’t know

Q6: In general, there is no such thing as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ bacteria: normal resident bacteria only become dangerous when they get out of balance.

Agree Disagree Don’t know

Q7: Just like a healthy biodiverse rainforest, a highly biodiverse skin microbiome keeps all the microbes acting in a mutually beneficial way to the human body.

Agree Disagree Don’t know

Q8: Introducing probiotics that are designed for the gut (eg. lactobacilli) on the skin have the potential to be even more dangerous: they are introducing an alien species to the skin in such large numbers that may overwhelm the immune defences.

Agree Disagree Don’t know

Q9: Using prebiotics designed for the gut, on the skin, is probably pointless as the microbes on the skin have a totally different function. The skin is not an organ designed to digest food.

Agree Disagree Don’t know

SECTION III: Whole Body Health

Q1: To maintain whole body health, your skin microbiome is just as important as your gut microbiome.

Agree Disagree Don’t know

Q2: Recent research suggests that a damaged skin microbiome may be a leading cause of food allergies.

Agree Disagree Don’t know

Q3: The skin and gut microbiome are part of an integrated ecosystem that maintains overall health.

Agree Disagree Don’t know

Q4: Everyday cosmetic products (including soaps) and long term use of modern topical medicines have been shown to have a profound detrimental influence on the skin barrier functions.

Agree Disagree Don’t know

Q5: All cosmetics labelled as ‘Natural’ contain only genuinely naturally extracted ingredients.

Agree Disagree Don’t know

Q6: Latest generation cosmetics should use techniques that help strengthen the skin microbiome by recreating the conditions for biodiversity to flourish.
