The microbes in and on your body are experiencing a mass extinction, according to a new documentary.
Dr. Martin Blaser and Dr. Gloria Dominguez-Bello say, in “The Invisible Extinction”, that this is down to our modern lifestyle; mainly over-use of antibiotics, and ultra-processed foods filled with chemicals.
But why is any of this important?
Well, a damaged microbiome has been linked to “most of the Human diseases affecting westernized countries.”
"In general, diversity is a marker for health. The more diverse the microbiome, the healthier the ecosystem."
It all started when they studied the microbiome of Amazonians with negligible contact to modern civilisation. These tribespeople had much higher diversity than people in the west.
However, the researchers say that we should be also worried about an even bigger problem: the health of the planet.
As its close link to overall health emerges, could the skin microbiome also play a large role?
